First, make a folder called “Pub” at the root level of your hard disk and copy any files or folders you want to make available via Gopher and/or Anonymous FTP into this folder. Make sure System 7’s File Sharing is enabled in the Sharing Setup control panel. Now select the “Pub” folder and choose Sharing… from the File menu. Turn on “Share this item and it’s contents” and “Make all currently enclosed folders like this one”, make the Owner whoever you expect to maintain the site, and give them all privileges and set the rest to See Files and See Folders but not Make Changes. Close the window and save the changes.
You would do well to avoid having names with spaces in the “Pub” folder, since they are sometimes difficult for FTP users to deal with.
Make sure all users on the Mac have GOOD passwords.
Now run FTPd Setup. Close the About window.
Click the FTP Setup button, and give Guests Read Only privs in the popup. Give Users and Owners whatever access you want them to have. If you enable remote mounting, FTP users will be able to mount any AppleShare servers on your network (assuming they know a username&password) so be very careful using this option. Click the Save button.
Click the FTP Users button and type “/Pub” into the default login directory. Click the Save button.
Skip the Security button, and click the Gopher Setup button. Enable Gopher, and type “/Pub” into the Root Directory field. Click the Save button.
Quit FTPd Setup. Run FTPd. You should now be able to FTP or Gopher to your Mac. Grab a copy of TurboGopher, Fetch, or Anarchie and try it out.
To log in, you must have File Sharing enabled (Sharing Setup), the user must be able to log in (Users&Groups), and at least one visible shared folder (Finder’s Sharing menu), and logins must be enabled in FTPd Setup.
